Essential facts about the TOEFL iBT exam
A standardized English proficiency assessment.
The TOEFL, a language test established in 1964, has gained international recognition as a prominent reference among standardized English tests. Its current form, the TOEFL IBT, is taken online and has become a popular choice for individuals seeking to assess their English proficiency. Many prestigious Anglo-Saxon universities rely on the TOEFL as a reliable measurement tool for evaluating applicants’ English proficiency, and it is recognized by over 8,500 higher education establishments worldwide. Obtaining TOEFL certification can open doors for studying in various countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Asia. The test is suitable for students, professionals, and non-native English speakers looking to demonstrate their English proficiency or accurately determine their level on the CEFR scale.
A test that is composed of four segments.
The TOEFL IBT is a test that checks how well someone can speak and understand English. The test is split into 4 parts, and each part is important for knowing the language well. To pass the test, the person taking it needs to show they can do all 4 parts well. The test is really long, about 4 and a half hours, and has very clear instructions.
- The first part of the test is called the Reading Test. It’s like a test in school where you have to read some things and then answer questions about what you read. This part can take up to 1 hour and 40 minutes, and has 3 to 5 different tests to do. You need to get at least 3 of them right to pass, but you won’t know which ones are being counted. Each test has around 15 questions to answer.
- The second part of the test is called the Listening Test. In this part, you have to listen to some audio recordings and then answer questions about them. This part can take up to 1 hour and 30 minutes, and has 6 to 9 different tests to do. Each test lasts for 10 minutes and has 5-6 questions to answer.
- The third part of the test is called the Speaking Test. You will be asked to talk about different topics related to university life. You will have some time to prepare your answers and then speak for a set amount of time. You will be asked to talk about a familiar person, object or event, choose between two options and explain why, and answer questions about short texts and audio recordings.
- The fourth part of the test is called the Writing Test. You will have to write essays based on texts and audio recordings related to university life. You will also have to express your opinion on a topic. It is important to practice using a QWERTY keyboard before the test to avoid wasting time and feeling stressed.
The TOEFL IBT test score is given on a scale from 0 to 120 points.
The TOEFL IBT test gives you a score out of 120 points, with each of the four parts being scored out of 30 points. Your scores are based on how many questions you answered correctly and how well you spoke and wrote. The total of these four scores is your final grade. Each section of the test is equally important.
Your TOEFL score is only valid for two years. After that, the people who make the test want to make sure you still have the same level of English, so you may need to take the test again if you want to prove your English skills to a company or university.
The correlation between the TOEFL IBT score and the CEFR.
The TOEFL score is not necessarily categorized as good or bad, but rather is designed to accurately assess an individual’s level of English proficiency. The interpretation of the score takes into account the reasons for taking the test, such as academic or professional purposes. Generally, universities require a minimum score for admission, which varies depending on the institution. The TOEFL score can be compared to the CEFR levels and provides detailed information about the candidate’s language skills. A score between 42 and 71 points indicates a basic level of English, which is insufficient for university admission, while a score between 71 and 94 points represents a correct mastery of the language that can support academic goals. A score above 94 points reflects a very high level of proficiency required by prestigious universities like Harvard or the London Business School.
